Richard Youngho Choi


Richard Youngho Choi, this year's recipient of the "Proud Korean Award'; is both a pioneer and a vision ary whose career and achievements parallel the remarkable growth of Korean American community. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded Radio Korea, one of the first Korean language radio stations in the U.S. He helped connect the Korean Americans to the world and to each other. 


During the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, his live broadcast around the clock helped save lives and gave relief and comfort to thousands by relaying real-time information and updates. In the aftermath of the devastating Riots, he helped organize the "100,000 Peace March" to advocate healing and reconciliation.  As a journalist and a broadcaster, he was the first to live broadcasts Los Angeles Dodgers' games in Korea, paving the way for Korean to become the 4th official language of the Major League Baseball. 


In 2002, he organized a series of outdoor viewing events for the FIFA World Cup being co-hosted by Korea and japan. His events brought together different generations of Korean Americans together to celebrate their common heritage, identity and pride. Recently, Gallup Korea named him "the most influential journalist in Los Angeles".
